The Friends of the San Pedro River is hosting a special event to mark the arrival of spring, the northward bird migrations, and provide information about the natural and human history of the San Pedro River.

The morning will start with a Big Morning Birding Challenge species count at several locations along the river within the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. Results of the count will be announced during the event.

There will be a series of short talks on topics such as how to be safe in a desert environment, invasive species, restoring desert ecosystems in the borderlands, and more.

Guided nature walks to the river will be offered, as well as a history tour of San Pedro House and tours of the xeriscape and butterfly gardens. Children will enjoy a scavenger hunt and nature-themed art activities.

The Friends of the San Pedro River will have volunteers available to share information about the Friends of San Pedro River, the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, San Pedro House, and the Friends’ partnership with the Bureau of Land Management. The Friends will also have a table displaying artifacts from the Murray Springs Clovis site, and Friends Docents Dwight and Chris Long will provide information about the site and its archaeological importance.

Participating organizations include the Southeastern Arizona Museum of Science and Technology, Southwest Wings, the Arizona Native Plant Society, the Cochise County Sheriff Department Search & Rescue Team, Borderlands& Cochise County Master Naturalists, The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Restoration, the City of Bisbee Camp Naco Project, and Old Pueblo Archaeology.
