Maricopa County Parks and Recreation is hosting its first-ever Seed Bomb Workshop on July 27, 2023, from 8:00 am until 11:30 am at Usery Mountain Regional Park Nature Center.
What is that you ask? That is an event we get together and create seed bombs with native seed that was collected in the parks, add clay and compost. This will help protect the seeds until the next monsoon event, and provide nutrients for the seed when the rains come, giving give these native seeds the best chance to germinate and grow!
The Seed bomb deployment (slinging) events will occur at several parks. You can select from two dates and different parks to help deploy the seed in areas that have been disturbed by invasive species, wildfire and historically overgrazed. You will learn all about invasive species, wildfires, and other disturbances, and how the parks are performing habitat (ecological) enhancements including the Desert Defenders program, to conserve and improve the parks’ native biodiversity.
The workshop will include processing seed, as well as mixing the seed into balls (bombs) using clay and compost, that will harden and be ready for slinging (need 24 hours).
