National Trails Day is June 3 but we will be celebrating all weekend long with a backcountry work event on passage 1. Nestled in the Huachuca Mountains, this is beautiful land of aspens, firs, and pines with sweeping views across grasslands into Mexico!

We will meet at the Sunnyside Canyon Trailhead Thursday morning. From there, we will backpack to our camp near Bathtub Spring (approx. 9 miles and 2600′ climbing). Friday and Saturday we’ll work the Crest Trail, clearing trees and addressing corridor issues. Sunday, we’ll hike back to our cars, doing additional clearing work along the way. Participants will need to provide their own backpacking equipment and food. Tools and training will be provided for anyone brave enough to come along!

Directions to TH:

We will be meeting at Sunnyside Canyon TH but it is listed as Eureka Canyon TH in Google Maps. Be sure to come from Sonoita, south on 83 toward Parker Canyon Lake. Continue to Sunnyside Canyon Road FR228, stay left for 2.5 miles, stay right at FR204/FR4759, then continue straight .03 miles to veer left to the trailhead. If you look closely, you will see directional arrow stickers and trailhead signs ahead at each intersection.

From Tucson, Google maps will route you over the mountain from Ft. Huachuca but do not go that way. Once you get to Sonoita, Google Maps should reroute you the correct way and you will be able to follow the directions above. There will be limited service driving to and at the TH so be sure to map it out before you leave.
