February 15- Tuesday, 7:00 AM
San Pedro House Trails (Sierra Vista, AZ)
Sign up on the Field Trip Page
Registration fee: $20/member, $40/non-member*
Trip difficulty: Easy, ~3 miles walking distance over mostly level terrain, some ups/downs in wash/river area, muddy conditions are possible in sections. Dress in layers, as dawn can be frosty near the river. Public restrooms are available at the parking lot.
We start our birding along the edges of the San Pedro House parking lot, where birds often perch up to take in the dawn sun. Volunteers keep seed feeders on the grounds around the house, and we’ll check those for sparrows, towhees, doves, and other feeder birds. After that we will head out on a loop around the grasslands, birding dirt roads and trails, while enjoying a view of the snow-capped Huachuca Mountains. A side trail to the pond(s), depending on conditions and recent sightings, will allow us to check for waterfowl and kingfishers. From the pond, we’ll find a trail to the river, and make our way downstream, checking river edges and the tall cottonwoods for both birds and mammals. A short climb out of the river bottom puts us again in the open grasslands, and on our trail back to the house grounds. The grounds and feeder stations are worthy of a recheck, as some birds do not get active until later in the morning. Wrap up by noon. The leader plans to enjoy an early lunch at one of the picnic areas, you are welcome to join if you’d like. Please plan to bring your own water, lunch or snacks. Meeting spot: East side of the San Pedro House parking lot (9800 AZ-90, Sierra Vista, AZ). Limited to 10 participants.
Leader: Julie Michael (jbirdsaz123@gmail.com)
