SUMMARY:Tumamoc Talks: Desert Purple Martins - Star Birds of the Arizona Monsoon
DESCRIPTION:The Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill invites you to its ongoing public lecture series exploring the science\, ecology\, history\, and culture of the Sonoran Desert. These talks highlight fascinating research and discoveries about the landscapes and species that make our region unique. All talks are free and open to the public. \n🗓 Wednesday\, April 1st🕠 5:30 PM \n🎤 Desert Purple Martins – Star Birds of the Arizona Monsoonwith Jennie MacFarland \nThe Desert Purple Martin is a remarkable and little-studied subspecies that times its nesting to the life-giving abundance of the Arizona monsoon. These birds nest almost exclusively in saguaros and other large columnar cacti\, making them a unique part of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem. \nDespite their distinctive behavior\, Desert Purple Martins remain extremely understudied\, with major gaps in our understanding of their nesting habits\, migration routes\, and wintering grounds. In this presentation\, Jennie MacFarland will share recent discoveries and new research findings\, along with captivating video and audio recordings that highlight the charm and fascinating behavior of these monsoon-timed birds. \nAbout the Speaker:Jennie MacFarland is the Director of Bird Conservation at the Tucson Bird Alliance. She co-coordinates the Arizona Bird Areas Program and leads the Tucson Bird Count\, a citywide urban spring bird survey that engages the community in bird conservation and research. \n📍 Location: Tumamoc Hill Boathouse (base of the Hill)1675 W. SUMMARY:Tumamoc Talks: Stinknet Stay Away!
DESCRIPTION:The Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill invites you to a public lecture in its ongoing series exploring the science\, ecology\, history\, and culture of the Sonoran Desert. These talks are free and open to the public and highlight current research and timely environmental issues affecting our region. \n🗓 Wednesday\, March 4th🕠 5:30 PM \n🎤 Stinknet Stay Away! An invasive species transforming desert wildfire risk \nStinknet (Oncosiphon pilulifer\, also known as globe chamomile) is a relatively new invasive species in Pima County\, though it has been present in the Sonoran Desert for nearly three decades. This aggressive plant dramatically increases wildfire risk by adding dense\, continuous fuel loads to desert landscapes where it spreads. \nIn this talk\, you’ll learn about the history\, biology\, and impacts of stinknet\, including how it threatens native plants and public safety. The presentation will also share practical tips for identification and removal\, empowering community members to help slow its spread. \nAbout the Speaker:Rachel Mitchell is an Associate Professor at the University of Arizona whose work focuses on how ecosystems across the Southwest respond to climate change\, invasive species\, and altered fire regimes. \n📍 Location: Tumamoc Hill Boathouse (base of the Hill)1675 W. SUMMARY:Tumamoc Talks: Reconciliation by Design: Planning the Santa Cruz River Urban Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:The Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill invites the community to a thought-provoking public lecture as part of its ongoing talk series exploring the science\, ecology\, history\, and culture of the Sonoran Desert. These talks bring together research\, storytelling\, and community perspectives to deepen our understanding of the desert we call home. All talks are free and open to the public. \n🗓 Wednesday\, February 4th🕠 5:30 PM \n🎤 Reconciliation by Design: Planning the Santa Cruz River Urban Wildlife RefugePresented by Mackenzie Waller \nThis presentation examines the proposed Santa Cruz River Urban Wildlife Refuge as a powerful opportunity for reconciliation through public landscape architecture and planning—broadening the idea of restoration to include people\, wildlife\, and place. \nOnce a river that connected communities of all kinds\, the Santa Cruz River was altered by extraction and neglect. Today\, community leaders and designers are working to shift this narrative. Guided by diverse community voices and ecological perspectives\, this effort emphasizes locally grounded strategies for resilient stewardship of our shared web of life. \nAbout the Speaker:Mackenzie Waller is a landscape architect\, urban designer\, and assistant professor at the University of Arizona’s College of Architecture\, Planning\, and Landscape Architecture. Her work focuses on environmental and spatial justice in urban environments. Her current research explores how story\, wildlife\, and play can help communities imagine and co-create more just and sustainable futures. \n📍 Location: Tumamoc Hill Boathouse (base of the Hill)1675 W.
