SUMMARY:Trail Work Days
DESCRIPTION:Yavapai Trails Association has worked with Prescott National Forest to set up each 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month as a trail workday. \nAt our work events you may enjoy routine brushing or trail building\, and occasionally we’ll spend a Saturday doing something a bit more adventurous. We may hike out further or do a slightly different type of work. Emails will go out prior to each work event with all the details. Please read them carefully to decide which work events are a good fit for you. \nYou may sign up to receive work event emails by sending an email to: yta.benefit@gmail.com and requesting to be added to our email list for volunteer workers. You do not need to be a member to join us for work events\, although we would appreciate it. Keep your eyes on our website and those emails! There may be opportunities for work every Saturday. \nThank you and Happy Trails! \nLook for an email just before each scheduled workday to remind you to RSVP and announce the location. Thank you for all your volunteer hours. \n*If you have them\, please bring your own hard hat/bike helmet\, gloves\, and eye protection. If you don’t have them\, we are able to provide those items. As always\, make sure to wear long sleeve shirts\, pants\, closed-toe shoes\, and bring snacks/water for the morning.

SUMMARY:Sonoran Speaker Series: Rattlesnakes\, Fact and Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Fear of rattlesnakes runs deep\, but most of it is built on myth\, not fact. In “Rattlesnakes\, Fact and Fiction\,” Bryan Hughes of Rattlesnake Solutions replaces that fear with understanding\, unpacking what these snakes really do for the Sonoran Desert and how we can live alongside them safely. SUMMARY:Tumamoc Talks
DESCRIPTION:The Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill hosts a series of talks focused on topics that relate to the science\, ecology\, history\, and culture of the Sonoran Desert. All talks are open to the public. \nWednesday\, October 14th at 5:30pm \nEphemeral jewels: hydrology\, ecology\, and trails connecting the tinajas of the Pinacate \nFor vast portions of the western Sonoran Desert\, tinajas provide the only available surface water for humans and wildlife. These bedrock-bound stream pools may hold water for weeks to over a year after significant rainfall events\, but their hydroperiods (cycles of wetting and drying) vary across tinajas. Since 2019\, we have studied dozens of tinajas across the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument to measure their hydroperiods\, document their aquatic biodiversity\, and their use by wildlife. Dozens of species of wildlife visit tinajas in both reserves\, including bighorn sheep\, mountain lions\, skunks\, golden eagles\, and migratory birds — and over 100 aquatic animal species live in their temporary waters. In the Pinacate\, traces of ancient Hia-Ced and Tohono O’odham trails lead from tinaja to tinaja\, demonstrating the deep cultural importance of these waterbodies as well. To more deeply connect with this landscape\, and the tinajas hidden within it\, we made a 5-day backpacking trip around the Pinacate volcano\, hiking across lava flows and relying solely on tinajas for drinking water along the 50-mile route. This presentation will include both an overview of our scientific studies as well as a photographic travelogue of our backpacking trip across the incomparable Pinacate. \nMichael Bogan is a stream and riparian ecologist and an associate professor in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona. He has been on the faculty since 2016 and he was named the Cecil and Carol Schwalbe Endowed Chair in Cold-Blooded Research\, Teaching\, and Conservation in 2025. Michael and his students love and study nearly everything that lives in or near desert waters\, including dragonflies\, turtles\, fish\, and birds. Prior to his position at the University of Arizona\, Michael did his graduate and postdoctoral studies at Oregon State University and the University of California\, Berkeley\, where he studied the impacts of stream drying and water management on aquatic biodiversity across Oregon\, California\, Arizona\, and northern Mexico. \nLocation: The Tumamoc Hill Boathouse (base of the Hill) \n\n1675 W. SUMMARY:Tumamoc Author Series 2026-27: Logan Phillips
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2026-2027 edition of the Tumamoc Author Series\, a collaboration between Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill\, the Southwest Center and the University of Arizona Press. In this third year\, we continue the tradition of bringing original\, diverse visions of the Southwest and engaging in lively conversations with our fellow Tumamoc pilgrims. \nOn October 21\, we start by wondering what it was like to grow up in Tombstone\, Arizona.Tucson Poet Laureate Logan Phillips\, author of Reckon\, will be in conversation with Melani Martinez\, author of The Molino: A Memoir. Thoughtful\, urgent\, and deeply human\, Reckon wrestles with questions of identity\, place\, and responsibility\, inviting readers to confront what it means to live attentively in fraught and changing times. Whether reflecting on the natural world\, social justice\, or the quiet moments that shape our inner lives\, Phillips’ voice offers insight\, compassion\, and challenge in equal measure. The two authors will explore the themes behind Reckon\, the creative process\, and the role of poetry as both witness and catalyst. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversation and connect with two of Tucson’s most compelling literary voices. Come listen\, reflect\, and reckon together. \n  \nLocation: The Tumamoc Hill Boathouse (base of the Hill)\n1675 W. Anklam Rd.
