SUMMARY:Monthly Speaker Series-Live Birds of Prey from Liberty Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Liberty Wildlife makes its annual visit on March 11\, bringing a selection of birds of prey for us to meet. \nLiberty Wildlife is a raptor rescue\, rehab\, education and conservation organization located on the banks of the Salt River between 24th and 28th Streets in Phoenix (just south of I-10). For 40 years Liberty has been a source of healing for birds and other animals in the Valley. The facility includes a full veterinary hospital\, ICU\, orphan care and outdoor rehab mews for the more than 10\,000 birds per year it serves. Animals that recover fully are released back to the wild.  Those who cannot go free due to injuries or behavior become education ambassadors or foster parent to orphans. The facility is fully non-profit and operates on admissions\, grants\, gifts and the generosity of 2-300 volunteers. It receives no government funding. \nEducators from Liberty will bring birds out on glove and tell us their stories as well as their natural histories. Photos are allowed. This is a great event for kids! \nWe meet at the Southeast Regional Library\, corner of Guadalupe and Greenfield Roads\, Gilbert. Come at 6:00 to chat with friends and shop our bookstore. The speaker will begin at 7. \nOur speakers are offered on Zoom\, but if you are in Phoenix we encourage you to attend this one in person! \nIf you cannot attend in person the speaker also will be available live on Zoom. Register here to receive the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Guided Hike at Jewel of the Creek Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the stunning Jewel of the Creek Preserve. This desert oasis\, filled with towering cottonwood and willow trees along Cave Creek\, holds one of the last remaining perennial streams in Maricopa County. The unusual year-round presence of water supports a myriad of unique plant and animal species. \nOur hike will take us on the Dragonfly Trail Loop which is a moderate\, 2-mile hike. There is an elevation change of about 100 feet\, with rocky uneven surfaces. There are no facilities at the preserve\, so plan ahead.

Witness the amazing spectacle of hundreds of migrating turkey vultures flying in to roost in the tallest trees by the Hassayampa River Walk pedestrian bridge during “All Vultures Eve”! \nThis free\, family-friendly event will have informational tables and optics available to borrow to get a closer look at the vultures and raptors. Wild at Heart raptor rehabilitation center will even have their education vulture\, “Mojo”\, and some other raptor friends to see up close! Other organizations that will be present include Town of Wickenburg\, Maricopa County Parks\, Arizona Game & Fish Department\, U.S. Bureau of Land Management\, Wickenburg Conservation Foundation\, Friends of Hassayampa\, Sonoran Audubon\, Maricopa County Master Naturalists\, and Desert Foothills Land Trust. Local food trucks will also be there if you need a bite to eat! Besides this event\, you can also see this migration spectacle daily from mid-March through early April! SUMMARY:2025 Catclaw Revenge - Passage 17a Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:The Alamo Canyon Passage is classic Sonoran desert – rugged\, remote and beautiful. Though it burned in the Telegraph fire of 2021\, this is still a striking landscape with amazing rock and spectacular views – and now it needs our help more than ever as it recovers from the damage done by the flames. Join the passage stewards in their mission to maintain this as one of the premier passages of the Arizona National Scenic Trail. This is a multi-day backcountry event – perfect for those looking for a challenge. It is also your chance to get revenge on those evil clumps of catclaw that have so often bitten you as you walked by!\n  \n  \nOur goals for the weekend: \nFriday:  \n\nHike approximately 9 miles south of the Picketpost Trailhead to our traditional camping spot in Coronation Wash. We’ll have support from a 4wd club to assist with transporting gear and water into this remote camp (high clearance\, modified 4wd needed to access).\nIf there’s energy left\, we’ll brush out around the camp or clear brush along the way.\n\n  \nSaturday:  \n\nGrub out mesquite and catclaw and all other spiny plants which have grown over the trail. (You know you want revenge!)\nCheck on water sources\nClear any problems with trail tread or identify areas for further work in future trips.\nUp to 3 miles of hiking (6 mile round trip) to reach the southern boundary of the passage\n\n  \nSunday: \n\nFinish up our work and head back to the trailhead for home (there’s an option to stay until Monday if you just can’t get enough!)\n\nMonday:  \n\nThe 4wd Club will come and pick up our gear. We’ll hike the rest of the crew back to Picketpost TH.\n\n  \nVolunteers will be rewarded with a hearty dinner cooked by the event host on Friday and Saturday nights and a cooler of icy beverages (or steaming hot ones as needed) available for your enjoyment. \n  \nThis is a backcountry event – we will be camping in a remote area and participants will need to bring their own camping gear. SUMMARY:History Walk to Clanton Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Join FSPR docent Sandy Huesman for a walk to the Clanton Ranch. Here Old Man Clanton grazed (stolen) cattle in a large pasture along the San Pedro. This site was a key location in the Wyatt Earp vs. The Cowboys epic.  A round trip to the site requires 1.5 miles of walking total. The trail is uneven gravel and dirt. The last 100 feet or so are up a gradual hill on a rocky\, uneven trail. Make sure you are able to handle this walk. Wear a hat\, sun protection\, appropriate clothing\, and sturdy shoes. Bring water and snacks. Meet at the Escapule Trailhead. Escapule Road intersects with Charleston Road 6 miles east of Sierra Vista. Turn south on Escapule Road and drive 1.3 miles south. Look for a dirt parking area on the left side. The docent will place a directional sign at its entrance\, a left turn. Megdal\, PhD is Director of The University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center\, a Cooperative Extension center and a research unit in the College of Agriculture\, Life & Environmental Sciences. Dr. Megdal will explain how Arizona water regulation depends on location\, type of use\, and water source. The presentation will provide a broad overview of Arizona water management and consider agriculture in different parts of the State.
