These talks highlight fascinating research and discoveries about the landscapes and species that make our region unique. All talks are free and open to the public. \n🗓 Wednesday\, April 1st🕠 5:30 PM \n🎤 Desert Purple Martins – Star Birds of the Arizona Monsoonwith Jennie MacFarland \nThe Desert Purple Martin is a remarkable and little-studied subspecies that times its nesting to the life-giving abundance of the Arizona monsoon. These birds nest almost exclusively in saguaros and other large columnar cacti\, making them a unique part of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem. \nDespite their distinctive behavior\, Desert Purple Martins remain extremely understudied\, with major gaps in our understanding of their nesting habits\, migration routes\, and wintering grounds. In this presentation\, Jennie MacFarland will share recent discoveries and new research findings\, along with captivating video and audio recordings that highlight the charm and fascinating behavior of these monsoon-timed birds. \nAbout the Speaker:Jennie MacFarland is the Director of Bird Conservation at the Tucson Bird Alliance. She co-coordinates the Arizona Bird Areas Program and leads the Tucson Bird Count\, a citywide urban spring bird survey that engages the community in bird conservation and research. \n📍 Location: Tumamoc Hill Boathouse (base of the Hill)1675 W. DESCRIPTION:Unearth the secrets of how rocks shape the world around us at August’s Science Saturday! \nExplore rock samples\, piece together the story of geologic history\, and more with hands-on experiences and activities for all ages.\nNo registration required—just come ready to learn\, create\, and have fun! \nScience Saturday is an event held on the first Saturday of every month from 9:30 am-11:30 am. Each month is focused on a different theme\, and each event offers fun and educational hands-on activities. Artists\, scientists\, and experts join us on occasion to provide extra special opportunities to learn and explore.  There is no need to RSVP\, and the events are in a drop-in format. \nThanks to generous funding from Flagstaff365\, Creative Flagstaff\, APS\, and the City of Flagstaff BBB Revenues\, this event is free and open to the public.
